Does Pine-Sol Kill Ants?

Full strength Pine-Sol can kill ants if they are drowned in it because it contains surfactants and solvents that dehydrate them instantly. For ants to stay alive, they have to breathe and remain moist all the time.

To get rid of ants, combine 4 ounces of Pine-Sol with 2 ounces of hot water in a spray bottle. Then sprinkle it on ants and ensure they are well soaked. This can also be used to deter ants on any surface like kitchen counters or floor.

When using this, do not mix it with lots of water because this is already part of any pine sol’s ingredient. Its strength becomes less effective when over-diluted. This makes it weak and it will not be effective against ants.

Does Pine-Sol Deter Ants?

Pine-sol is a strong cleaning agent with a strong odor that can remove and neutralize ants’ pheromones that they use to communicate. This can be used to repel ants at home since they cannot trace each other once their communication scent is naturalized.

The most effective way to keep ants away is to use full-strength Pine-Sol. Do not mix it in water when spraying it on their trails. Pine sole in its original state has a strong lemon scent. Naturally, ants hate the smell of lemon since it irritates their breathing pores.

Using this when controlling a serious infestation can still be economical because you do not need a lot of pine sol for the job. In fact, just a tablespoon of this on their trail is enough to deter them.

However, you need to replace it every 1-2 hours because the smell will fade with time. Even if this is the case, that is a long time enough to keep them away because ants will not walk over any pine sol solution.

Can Pine-Sol kill Ant Eggs?

Yes, Pine-sol can kill ant eggs but only if they are soaked in it. The main challenge is that ants do not just lay eggs randomly like other pests. It is the female queen ant that does this. The queen is always hidden in the nest and surrounded by the worker ants.

The only way to kill ant eggs with pine sol is to mix equal parts of pine sol with hot water. They flush it into the nest to drown all the ants in it and their eggs. This is a sure way of getting rid of them since they will be soaked in the solution.

Ants cannot survive in hot water since it will burn them to death. Pine-sol will increase the eggs’ mortality rate by destroying their contents and leaving an unpleasant odor behind. This way, ants can never use the nest again.

Ants are smart and they are good at picking up dangerous scents. They cannot use a nest that has an irritating odor. They will have to relocate and this will help in controlling an infestation.

Remember to use hot water since a combination of cold water and Pine-Sol will not get rid of ants’ eggs. Even if it does, some may still survive because cold water will not soak the egg outer layers as a hot one would do.

How to Kill Ants in Plants with Pine-Sol

To get rid of ants in potted plants, mix 1/2 cup of distilled water with 1 cup of Pine-sol and spray it on the plants. Get close to them while spraying so that there is enough contact. The strong pine sol odor will instantly repel and keep ants from crawling on the leaves and stems.

This can also be used to remove ants from the plat’s pot. Ants can nest at the base of a potted plant and some will even dig into the soil. Simply sprinkle the pine sol solution on the pot and let it dry on its own.

However, do not pour a concentrated Pine-sol solution into the soil. This can potentially increase the acidity levels and chock your plant. Ensure that it is well diluted since a small amount is enough to deter ants.

When killing ants in soil, mix 4 ounces of pine sole with 12 ounces of distilled water. Then sprinkle this on the soil in small quantities to deter ants. Note that this will only keep them away but will not really kill them.

Control Measures

Pine-sol can be used to keep ants from getting into the house. Once you have noticed their entry points. Soak some cotton balls in pure lemon Pine-sol and place them at the entry points. This is enough to deter them from using the same routes again. Pine-sol can also help in getting rid of ants in cucumber plants or other vegetable plantations.

An equal combination of Pine-sol and hot water can also be sprayed in cracks on the walls. This will help in killing ants and their queen that are nesting in there. However, this should be done moderately to avoid soaking and destruction of the internal wall surface.

After spraying it on the walls, use a clean hand towel to wipe any dripping water. This can also help in removing any stains and unwanted marks on the walls. The same steps can be sued in wiping floors to get rid of ants in the cracks.

Pine-sol can also be added to the final rinsing water when washing. Add 4 ounces of Pine sole together with the usual detergent that you normally use. This also helps in removing grease and stains on clothes. This is also a good way to get rid of ants in bedding at home.

In terms of safety and control, avoid inhaling Pine-sol odor and keep it away from your young ones. It can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people. Do not use Pine-sol for bugs in your bedroom or on pet bedding at night since the strong Pine-sol odor can equally affect them.

Pine-Sol for Ants in Wooden Floor

Wooden floors are ants’ favorite habitats because they do not retain cold-like cement and tiles do. Once they find cracks, gaps, and holes on it, ants will nest in them and build a colony in there.

To kill ants on wooden floors, clean the flour just like you always do. Then pour 3 cups of Pine-sol into 5 liters of distilled warm water in a bucket. Use this to wipe the floor and ensure you squeeze it into the cracks and gaps.

In some cases, a combination of pure full-strength pine sol, hot water, and dish soap for ants in wooden floors may destroy the finishing. It is important to dilute it to avoid any damage. However, do not use pine sol on wooden surfaces with no finishing coating on them.

This should only be used on sealed wood in order to avoid any damage on them. An easy way to check if your wooden floor or surface has been sealed with a good coating is to clean a small area first and wait for 1-2 hours. After that, check if the wood is okay or there is a color change on its surface.
